The Niagara Escarpment winds its way down the Bruce Peninsula and so does the famous Bruce Trail, offering hikers a chance to witness the incredible views and unbridled nature that the Biosphere provides. The Bruce Trail was opened in 1967 and is Canada’s oldest and longest hiking trail. 150 kms of trails are located on the Bruce Peninsula and are considered the best in Southern Ontario, offering hiking for both the beginner and veteran hiker. The trails are clearly marked and the scenery can vary from being high on a cliff to standing below a waterfall. Watch for many different types of trees, birds, wildlife, and plants (such as ferns, lady slippers, mushrooms, and rare orchids). Fall is a great time to hike: no bugs, less people, perfect temperatures, and the views are spectacular. The colours in the fall are a painter’s paradise, as the reds, oranges, yellows, and greens can stretch for miles and numerous small waterfalls flow down from the escarpment.
Day Hike Guides can be purchased from any tourist information centre and provide lots of helpful information, including the locations of access points. Much of the trail is on private property that the landowners generously offer so that everyone can enjoy the unique and incredible views and the close experience with nature. Please remember to treat the trail and surrounding wilderness with respect so that future hikers can enjoy the same beauty for generations to come! Remember, “Take only pictures and leave only footsteps!”
Trail can be as close as 10 minutes from Lake Francis Cottages
